An insightful and inspiring history of the Janeway Children's Hospital written by Dr. Rick Cooper - a pediatrician who has worked at the Janeway for 43 of its 50 years.

In 2016, the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre—‘The Janeway’ to most—celebrated 50 years of operation. For 43 of those years, Dr. Rick Cooper has been a pediatrician at the hospital, helping thousands of sick children from across Newfoundland and Labrador. This book peels back the hospital curtains and peeks through the ward doors, introducing readers to the many people who have worked at this unique hospital. It also delves into the fight to build the original Janeway at a time of bleak provincial finances, and follows its evolution into a leading modern teaching hospital, responsible for elevating the standard of health care up to or surpassing national levels.

Dr. Rick Cooper has spent much of his career as a teaching physician and practicing pediatrician at the Janeway Hospital in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He retired as a faculty member of Memorial University’s medical school in 2011. He is a Professor Emeritus. He was educated at St. Bonaventure's College.

In 2014 Dr. Cooper received the Silver Orator Award, which is given to the professor who has provided the best lectures with respect to content, style, humour and aptness. He has previously received the Silver Orator Award from the graduating classes of 2005, 2001, 1996 and 1991.
Dr. Cooper was also honoured as the Royal College 2014 Mentor of the Year for Atlantic Canada. In 2008, he received the Dr. Craig Loveys Teaching Award and in 2005 he received the Royal College Specialist of the Year for Atlantic Canada.

Reviews:
Cooper's detailed account of the last decade and a half of the Janeway's activities is a fitting tribute to all staff involved in the care of women and ailing children. As such, he has included many vignettes of the Janeway's young patients who displayed amazing feats of bravery, tenacity, resilience, and hope - sometimes against all odds. In these stories the heroic and tragic often merge. Cooper has been a pediatrician for 43 of the 50 years of the Janeway's existence. His experience of both the "old" and "new" facilities, along with his skill as an institutional biographer, shine through this book. All royalties from it are donated to the Janeway Foundation. JTH Connor is the John Clinch Professor of Medical Humanities and History of Medicine at MUN. He bought his own personal copy of The Janeway: 50 Years of Caring for Children, and thinks that you should too!
